Detoxifying foot pads?

I noticed in the little rectangular ad space on my blog that there was a link to something called "detoxifying foot pads". Curious, I clicked on it to see what it was. They claim that it's a product developed in Asia that contains some natural ingredients that combine to naturally draw toxins out of your feet.

Considering your feet are one of the major sweat outlets, I could see how it might possibly work. They claim that you wear these pads at night, and the next morning you'll find gross, brown, sticky goo on the pads, supposedly the toxins it drew out over the course of the night.

I'm open-minded, but skeptical when products make unscientific claims. So I researched them. Apparently there are many companies selling these things and they all make the same claims. Could they all be wrong?

A couple of forums I found had people de-mystifying some of the "magic" around these foot pads. This one took the fancy names for the foot pad ingredients and basically said that it was sand, sugar and wood vinegar... which will turn brown when wet. Your feet are always sweating, so of course it will turn these pads brown. And the sugar gives the "brown goo" its stickiness.

I came to the conclusion that these pads do nothing other than make your feet sticky and gross. Your naturally occuring foot sweat triggers the pad to turn colors, and that's it. Sounds like a scam to me.

In my next post I'll see if I can find methods for detoxifying your body that actually have a scientific basis behind them. Methods that actually work you can usually do on your own, and not with any kind of fancy product being peddled by shysters.

Funny...I thought these pads were bogus when I read about them, but my hubby really wanted to try them. We used them last night for the first time and indeed they turned black (not gooey). I can't believe it, but the backache that I wake up with EVERY morning, was gone! Also, I have a bad ankle and foot that are very creaky and sore in the morning and when I got out of bed, they didn't hurt a bit! Also realize that the "sweat" you talk about is really not true. I don't know about you, but my feed do not sweat at all when I'm in bed asleep! You wear these pads while you are asleep and take them off in the morning. I can't believe there is a difference in the way I feel after just one use...and I was not expecting to feel anything at all. I'm very impressed and I'm glad I bought the full month supply that is recommended to completely detoxify. After that, a couple pads a month should be fine. I'm so happy with them. I do see why you think they are a scam, but try them. We got ours of the Gaiam website, so I do not know about other brands. Good luck!

The feet are one of those places that sweat all the time, whether you're sleeping or not. If you're not wearing socks it would be hard to tell whether there's sweat or not because it tends to evaporate quickly.

dragon girl,

I don't know much about "blogs," and can't even really say how I got to yours...mystery to me! Anyway, I just started using the detoxifying foot pads from Gaiam catalog, and am really intrigued too! I was initially interested because I've been using a cleansing and replenishing program now for almost a couple of months, and I'M HOOKED FOR LIFE! I LOVE how it feels to be clean on the inside, and feel like I've become the me I always knew I was inside. Since you said you'd research and get back to your folks...whatever you call those who tune into your blog, regarding reputable cleansing/detoxifying (or however you said it), I thought you might want to know more. You can contact me at karolynn@MammothLiving.com if you want to know more about a really effective cellular level cleansing program. Not only do I feel clean, energetic, more alive than ever (at age 45), but am about 18 pounds lighter than I was when I started on 1/22/07!
